Visit one of the oldest houses of worship in America at the Gloria Dei National Historic Site in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the second-oldest Swedish church in the United States. Today, the Gloria Dei Church National Historic Site is home to tours and a thriving community.

The current structure of the Gloria Dei (meaning "Old Swedes'") Church was built in 1700. and is a perfect example of 17th century Swedish church architecture. In 1845, the Gloria Dei Church's congregation joined the Episcopalian Church, and in 1942, the church was officially declared the Gloria Dei Church National Historic Site.

The self-guided tour of the church section offers visitors a glimpse of items from the early days of the church, including a Baptismal Font and the Cherubim below the organ. The cemetery at the Gloria Dei Church National Historic Site is the final resting place of many members of George Washington's army, as well as Alexander Wilson, called "the Father of American Ornithology." After a visit to the Gloria Dei Church National Historic Site, visitors can find dozens of restaurants in walking distance, ranging from deli to Chinese.

To get to the Gloria Dei Church National Historic Site, take I-95 south to exit 16, turn left onto Columbus Boulevard, and turn left at Christian Street.
