Public Recreational Parks in Philadelphia, Lancaster, Poconos, Eastern Pennsylvania

Things to do / Travel Guide

With many national and state parks in the eastern Pennsylvania region, it's definitely worth your while to stop in one when driving from place to place. All such parks cater to children's activities - such a renting an inner tube or a mountain bike for an hour or two - and make for a nice, carefree break during or after structured site tours.

Some such parks are: the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Park, located in the Lehigh Valley region, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area in the northeast, on the Delaware River, and the Valley Forge National Historical Park, in Valley Forge, near Philadelphia.

If your trip plans don't extend outside Philadelphia proper, be sure to stop in Fairmount Park. This is an excellent place to relax, where your kids can run and play as a midday break from, or after a long day of, sightseeing. This 9,200-acre park is one of the largest urban parks in the world. In the park, at Drive Sports, your kids can rent bikes and rollerblades to burn off some youthful energy. While they're letting off steam, you can enjoy a cup of tea at the Japanese House and Garden, a reconstruction of a 17th-century Japanese residence.
