Eastern Pennsylvania is a highly-developed tourist destination, and rates can swing wildly from one season to the next, even from day to day. It pays to investigate special offers, and to always ask what an advertised rate includes. Generally, being flexible with your dates can result in significant savings, as even the top hotels offer discounted rates on weekdays and during their off seasons.
Philadelphia
Philadelphia hotels cost lower on average than hotels in other U.S. cities of similar size. All of the major national hotel chains are represented in Philadelphia. The general rule in terms of price is that the closer the hotel to historical sites and major attractions, the more expensive. Within an hour's drive from Center City there are over 16,000 Philadelphia hotels to choose from, including historic inns and converted Victorian homes, ranging from $60-$300 per night.
Luxury accommodations can run anywhere from $200-$300 per night; higher for a double room. Moderately-priced Philadelphia hotels cost about half as much, and can be quite comfortable. If you want to personally experience the city's history, stay in a bed and breakfast establishment (B&B), where a charming Colonial-style accommodation will cost just a little more than the average city hotel. Be aware, however, that some B&Bs don't accommodate small children. Lower-priced lodging is available at a wide variety of name-brand motels, especially close to the airport. There are plenty of hostels around the city, some of which are actually quite centrally-located, where a dormitory accommodation costs around $20 per night.
Pennsylvania Dutch Country
In Pennsylvania Dutch Country, some private farms offer family-style accommodation where you can experience the Amish lifestyle firsthand for about $60-$85 a night.
Northeast Mountain Area
In the Pocono Mountains area, luxury resort hotels are plentiful and popular, but expensive, costing up to $500 a night. Accommodation can also be found in a lower price range in the national name-brand chain hotels found throughout the resort and sport areas. Motels, cabins, and youth hostels are also available, if your budget is somewhat lower. Cabins, for instance, cost anywhere from $100-$400 a night, but sleep up to 12 people. Wherever you're staying in this area, be sure to book in advance.
Brandywine Valley
If you take the Brandywine Scenic Byway from the Pennsylvania-Delaware border down to Wilmington, Delaware, you can usually find accommodation in one of many charming colonial B&Bs or a very nice mid-range hotel for under $100 a night.
