Costs for Philadelphia, Lancaster, Poconos, Eastern Pennsylvania

Things to do / Travel Guide

Philadelphia

The “City of Brotherly Love” provides the visitor with a broad range of prices for accommodations, food, and entertainment. Philadelphia offers first-class accommodations, elegant dining, attractions, and luxury shopping, as well as other more reasonably-priced options.

On average, the cost of staying in a hotel room in Philadelphia is lower than in other similar sized U.S. cities. Upscale, gourmet five-course dinners at a French Bistro on Walnut Street, Philadelphia's upscale Restaurant Row can naturally be very expensive. On the flip side of the coin, you can also pay under $10 for a legendary “Philly cheesesteak sandwich;” truly a whole meal in itself. There's also a wide range of dining options in between; plenty to suit any budget or ethnic preference

There are plenty of free public attractions, especially the historical sites, but admission fees to museums and other attractions can add up quickly. You can choose to purchase a CityPass, which offers a discount on admission to either five or seven of the top attractions, and is a good value. The attractions included are the Independence Seaport Museum, National Constitution Center, Philadelphia Zoo, Philadelphia Trolley Works, The Academy of Natural Sciences, The Franklin Institute, and the Science Museum. The CityPass can be bought at any one of these sites.

Outside Philadelphia

A general rule to follow would be “the further away from Philadelphia, the lower the cost.” This would apply for both food and lodging. Lancaster County, on the other hand, while not as expensive as Philadelphia, is not an inexpensive area for food or lodging.

Inns and B&Bs are readily available in the small towns throughout the countryside and charge anywhere from $60-$250 a night. In the Pocono Mountains area costs can run into the hundreds of dollars for staying in a luxury resort hotel, while many name-brand chain hotels can also be found in a lower price range.
Youth hostels, motels, and cabins are cheaper, of course, and are also available in the Poconos. Reserving in advance is mandatory.

Theme parks, like Chocolate World in Hershey Park, near Harrisburg, or the Crayola Factory, in Easton, can be expensive, and can also include high parking fees. Without food or shopping, entrance fees to the various attractions can run up to $25-30 per person per day.
