Our Sports Superfan Says:
A premier turf racing site, the relatively new Colonial Downs is a great place to catch some races during the summer and fall. Open for live racing in June and July for the thoroughbreds, and Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Saturday of September to November for harness racing, Colonial Downs is the home of the widest turf course in the nation – the Secretariat Turf Course – at 180 feet.
The most important races at the park are the Grade 2 Virginia Derby and the Grade 3 Colonial Turf Cup – half of the "Grand Slam of Grass" turf racing series. The track holds 10,000 fans, and has OTB and simulcasting facilities in addition to its live racing.
Colonial Downs is located in New Kent, Virginia, about halfway between Williamsburg and Richmond, Virginia. However, it has also been associated with the Maryland Jockey Club and Maryland racing for much of its history.
