Our Shopping Expert Says:
The Coliseum Mall was one of the first large malls in the Virginia Beach and Hampton, VA area and for a while was the busiest mall in the area. Although the mall was shut in 2007 and mostly demolished, visitors and Virginia Beach locals will be glad to know that the mall is back, better than ever as the Peninsula Town Center.
The anchor stores – Macy's and JCPenney are still there, Target has joined as an anchor and they are joined by a new lineup of retail and dining establishments. After shopping at Claire's, Victoria's Secret or Blue Ridge Mountain Sports , enjoy one of the 15 restaurants, ranging from Mexican to Japanese to steak and hamburgers. As you can imagine, old fans of the Coliseum Mall in Virginia Beach will find the replacement to be a better shopping destination and a more enjoyable place to spend a few hours.
A unique feature of the Peninsula Town Center is Mary's Park, across for the entrance to Macy's Department Store. The park is named after 4 significant educators in the area of Virginia Beach, Hampton and the Peninsula. The landscaping and garden makes for a very pleasant break from shopping, especially on mild spring afternoons. Enjoy the mall and then head off to some of the other area attractions – the Coliseum (sorry, Peninsula) Mall is just across the I-64 bridge from the Norfolk Naval Station. If the kids have had their fill of shopping (even if it is mostly for them), wind up the afternoon with a day at the zoo in Norfolk, VA.
