Visit a solemn place that resonates throughout American history at the Yorktown National Cemetery near Yorktown, Virginia. The Yorktown National Cemetery is located near the site of the last battle of the American Revolution, which later served as a battlefield during the American Civil War. Today, the Yorktown National Cemetery is home to 2,183 graves of those killed in the American Civil War, as well as fascinating tours of the connected Yorktown Battlefield.

In 1781, George Washington and his Continental Army won the last great battle of the Revolutionary War against British and German forces at Yorktown, Virginia. Eight decades later, Yorktown once again figured prominently in the Civil War, during which 632 Union soldiers were buried in the heart of the 1781 battlefield. In 1866, 1,500 Union graves from within a 50 mile radius were relocated to Yorktown, thus making this cemetery a focal point of the Yorktown Battlefield section of the Colonial National Historical Park.

Today, visitors to Yorktown National Cemetery can experience self-guided tours of the pristine 4,300 acre grounds. Though only 747 of those buried at Yorktown National Cemetery are identified, it is still important to visit and remember all those who fought and died in defense of our nation's heritage. After their visit to Yorktown National Cemetery, tourists can travel to modern day Yorktown, where they can find a variety of restaurants.
