The history of the American Civil War comes to life through an exciting visit to the Richmond National Battlefield Park around Richmond, Virginia. The Richmond National Battlefield Park brings together over 30 historical sites from the American Civil War, including the sites of many battles during the 1862 Seven Days Battles and the largest Confederate wartime hospital.
In the Seven Days Battles from June 25 - July 1, 1862, Confederate general Robert E. Lee drove major general George McClellan's Union Army of the Potomac back from Richmond, Virginia, covering the sites of Oak Grove on June 25, Beaver Dam Creek on June 26, and Malvern Hill on July 1. In 1864, lieutenant general Ulysses S. Grant (later to become the eighteenth President of the United States from 1869–1877), fought Lee at the Battles of Cold Harbor and New Market Heights to capture Richmond and Petersburg, respectively. In 1936, the site was designated as the Richmond National Battlefield Park in memory of all the blood shed in the 7,307 acres.
Visitors to the Richmond National Battlefield Park can enjoy the walking trails throughout the park. The Chimborazo Medical Museum at the park commemorates the former site of the Confederate's largest wartime hospital with a scale model of the hospital and a short documentary about the medical practices of the era. Each of the individual sites of Civil War battles preserved at the park hosts self-guided walking tours and exhibits of the area. The visitor centers at Cold Harbor Battlefield, Fort Harrison and Glendale/Malvern Hill Battlefields within the park include scale maps of the site. After visiting the Richmond National Battlefield Park, tourists can find a variety of restaurants in nearby Richmond.
