American Revolutionaries finally won freedom for North Carolina in an epic battle at the Moores Creek National Battlefield near Wilmington, North Carolina. The Moores Creek National Battlefield commemorates the 1776 victory of American Patriots over British Loyalists that secured this colony from control by the British crown. Today, the 88-acre site offers visitors the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of historical figures and learn more about the battle through audiovisual presentations.
In 1776, 1,600 British Loyalists, mostly Scottish Highlanders armed with broadswords, attacked what they thought was a much smaller force of American Patriots at Moores Creek. Stunned to find 1,000 well-armed Patriots, the Loyalists were forced to retreat with heavy casualties. This dramatic victory for the Patriots convinced the colony of North Carolina to be the first to vote for independence. In 1926, the battlefield was established as a national military park and in 1980 it was re-designated as a National Battlefield.
The visitor center at the Moores Creek National Battlefield offers an audiovisual experience documenting the history of the site. A one-mile walking trail guides visitors through significant sections of the Moores Creek National Battlefield. A one-third-mile colonial forest walking trail takes visitors back in time to the days before America's independence. The site also offers opportunities for bird watching and fishing. Visitors can find a wide variety of restaurants in nearby Wilmington, ranging from fast food to Italian cuisine.
