Our History Buff Says:

Visit the site of the first permanent English colony in North America and step back into history! Walk the same grounds as John Smith and Pocahontas and learn little known facts about America's noble beginnings.

Jamestown National Historic Site consists of 22 acres on the western end of Jamestown Island, including the original site of the famous three sided 1607 fort. Visitors can tour the Memorial Church, which sits on the very site of the 1617 church and see the streets and foundations of homes, taverns and industrial complexes once brimming with life. If you're looking for a bit of activity, why not walk, run or bike either the three or five mile treks on the island, and if it's nature you seek, there are several hundred species of birds here to see, including bald eagles, raccoons, opossums, mink and red tail fox, and reptiles and amphibians such as turtles, lizards, snakes and frogs. History buffs will enjoy English colonial America at Jamestown and the rich, 200-year military history. Guided tours concentrate on America's beginnings and the whole family can enjoy the costumed interpreters portraying 17th century residents. Visitors can learn about the trials, tribulations, successes and failures during Jamestown's 92 years as the social and political center of Virginia.

To get there from I-64, get off on exit 242A (Route 199 West). Turn right at the second light, S. Henry Street, and then another right onto Colonial Parkway. Follow it to the Jamestown Entrance Station, and enjoy the great learning experience with your whole family!
