Our History Buff Says:

Pay tribute to America's first and greatest hero who helped establish the United States as a nation! George Washington Birthplace preserves the heart of the Washington lands and the virtuous character of our first president!

In addition to the Memorial House, visitors to the George Washington Birthplace National Monument can see the historic birthplace home and the Colonial Kitchen House, where costumed re-enactors demonstrate candle-making and soap-making. Stroll through the Colonial Herb and Flower Garden, and see plants that Washington once grew, such as thyme, sage, basil, hollyhocks, forget-me-nots, and roses. The Colonial Living Farm still raises livestock, poultry, and crops of the 18th century variety (including tobacco), using farming methods common to the period. Visitors are also invited to tour the Washington family Burial Ground, which contains the graves of 32 members of George Washington's family. History buffs will get a kick out of the real artifacts recovered from the burned-down Washington birthplace home, such as a bowl, clay figurine, wine bottle seal belonging to Augustine Washington, wine bottle, and keyhole plate. (George Washington's house burned down in 1779 and was not reconstructed until 1931.) A 15-minute film depicting Washington family life is shown in a theater at the Visitors' Center as well.

The George Washington Birthplace National Monument is located about 40 miles east of Fredricksburg in the Northern Neck of Virginia. Take VA Route 3 to get there. Feel like an American patriot as you step back in history and become a guest at the greatest revolutionary hero's home!
