Military history buffs will enjoy making a stop at Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware on the Delmarva Peninsula. Located at the mouth of the Delaware Bay, Cape Henlopen was an ideal and strategic military defense location; the U.S. army established a base there in 1941, during World War II. The sand dunes provided ideal camouflage for bunkers and guns, and to spot enemy vessels, the army built a series of observation towers along the shore. Today you can duck into the WWII-era bunkers and climb to the top of one of the concrete observation towers to look out onto the clear blue sea.
