Things to do / Travel Guide

When it comes to the eastern North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland region, the terroir is trying. While the region's weather is not ideal, with occasional hurricanes and summers that tend to overstay their welcome, vines cling to what the tourists love most about the region - cool ocean breezes, soft, rich sand, and intense sun. These three elements make for great wines. With Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and reds and whites of all varieties, the eastern North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland region offers award-winning flavors as complex as the climate that produces them.

Wineries in Eastern Virginia

The Williamsburg Winery produces the best-selling wine in Virginia and is the largest winery in the state. A nice break from the crowded area attractions, stop by the Williamsburg Winery for a tour and a tasting. The winery also features gourmet dining The Gabriel Archer Tavern.

Wineries on the North Carolina Shore

The Wright brothers might never have made it to Kitty Hawk if these wineries were around in 1903. Today, several miles from Kitty Hawk in the northeast corner of North Carolina, Martin Orchard and Vineyard's offers scenic picnic spots overlooking Knotts Island Bay, in addition to tastings and tours. Families will also enjoy picking fruit in the orchards.

In nearby Jarvisburg, Sanctuary Vineyards offers tours of their vineyards and winery as well as tastings in the historic Cotton Gin.
