Our History Buff Says:

Distinctly resembling the U.S. Capitol building in Washington D.C., in Colorado you can see what it would look like if they painted the whole thing gold. Solid, 24 karat gold. The Colorado State Capitol Building in Denver is definitely one of the more austere state capitols, built in the 1890's, and plated with gold in 1908. The gold is in commemoration of the early pioneers who established the state in the Gold Rush days, when the population boomed after the discovery of gold in 1859.

Up close, you can inspect the Sate Capitol's copper and glass embedded tall entrance doors, with it's unique antique 19th century light posts, and fascinating stone pillars with carvings depicting life in pre- and early- statehood Colorado all along the west entrance. From the capitol's perimeter, flag down a horse and buggy for a romantic ride around the gold studded building!

The State Capitol Building is built at exactly one mile above sea level, earning Denver the moniker "The mile high city." Take your picture at the "One Mile Above Sea Level" mark etched onto one of the steps on the top landing of the west entrance stairs. Or check out the red granite plaque depicting the ten commandments on the Lower Capitol Lawn.

Guided tours are free, and are given every hour and last about 45 minutes. They start at 9:15am, and continue on through 2:30pm. During the summer months (June – August) the hours are extended to 9:00am through 3:30. Capital tours and dome tours are separate so be sure to budget enough time for both!

To get there, get off of I-25 onto US-40/Colfax Ave. Keep right at the fork and continue on to merge onto W Colfax Ave / US-287/US-40 . The State Capitol is the building with the big gold plated dome on your right – you can't miss it!
