Our Sports Superfan Says:
When Denver's pro baseball, basketball, and hockey teams got new stadiums in the late 1990s, the NFL's Broncos began work on their own as well to replace the aging Mile High Stadium. While fans were initially opposed to such a beloved landmark being replaced, eventually they warmed to Invesco Field at Mile High, and it continues to maintain the Broncos historic home-field advantage, helped by the mile-high air of Denver.
Invesco Field opened in 2001, with the hometown Broncos defeating the New York Giants in a nationally televised game with Broncos legends from the past cheering them on at the stadium. In its first seven years, Denver has won nearly three quarters of its home games at Invesco Field at Mile High. In the playoffs, the Broncos have only hosted a pair of games as of the end of the 2007 season, winning one and losing one (the AFC Championship Game) in 2005.
In addition to the Broncos', Invesco Field is also home to the Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse. It also hosts other assorted one-time sporting events and concerts. It was also the home of Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids for a number of years until they moved to a suburban soccer-only venue in 2007.
Tours of Invesco Field at Mile High are available Tuesday-Saturday in the summer (June-August) and Thursday-Saturday the rest of the year. While the 75-minute tours generally leave on the hour between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., there are some times and dates where they are not available, so that it's strongly recommended to make reservations in advance.
Located in downtown Denver, Invesco Field is best served by the Route 101 train from Union Station.
