In the shadow of Pikes Peak, massive redwoods petrified by volcanic eruptions and thousands of fossil remains dating back millions of years are on display for visitors to enjoy. Montane, birch, and pine forests, along with blossoming meadows are home to a wide mix of plant and animal life including elk, bear, mountain lions, prairie junegrass, birds of prey, and dainty wildflowers.
The short Petrified Forest Loop will lead you past the "Big Stump" and a famous excavation pit. The longer Hornbeck Wildlife Loop offers marvelous mountain overlooks and wildlife observation. Hiking and horseback riding are the main recreational activities in the park.
