Our Museum Expert Says:

Take a step back in time and see what life was like in early Denver's pioneer days! Check out covered wagons, Indian buffalo hunts, and much more at the Colorado History Museum!

Constructed in 1977, the Colorado History Museum, headquarters of the Colorado Historical Society, preserves a collection of historic and prehistoric artifacts. The museum is easy to spot because of its huge, colorful mural of Native Americans, miners, and red rocks, and there's a great brick area outside the front door, complete with a grassy strip that's perfect for relaxing.

Inside the museum, "Ancient Voices" and "Confluence of Cultures," are the first major new permanent exhibits, dedicated to the history of Colorado's native tribes and the state's Pioneer era, respectively. Other exhibits highlight eras from the days before settlers arrived to the boom periods of mining, as well as the growth of historic preservation and black cowboys in the American West. Kids will enjoy the Conestoga wagons, old touring cars, and artifacts, from rifles to land-grant surveys and old daguerreotypes, and there's also a life-sized display on early transportation and industry.

The museum's well-stocked store offers a full selection of books on Colorado and the West, as well as a unique selection of Indian arts and Colorado crafts.

Families should check out the Colorado History Museum's new weekend program just for families, with activities for all ages to help you explore Colorado's past, and for the more serious history-buffs, the museum offers a series of lectures and statewide historical and archaeological tours. So clear the day and come pay a visit!

The Colorado History Museum is located at the corner of 13th Ave. and Broadway. From I-25, take the Broadway/Lincoln exit. Please note Broadway is a one-way street at 13th Ave.
