The eastern Colorado Rockies region offers visitors a chance to see some wonderful zoos in addition to the areas spectacular wildlife opportunities.
Denver Aquarium, Colorado
Not far from Denver's zoo is the Downtown Aquarium, where you'll be able to dine along the edge of a 150,000-gallon tank from which guitarfish can watch you as you eat. Of course you'll also receive large scale exhibits of other fish, marine mammals, and underwater plantlife.

Not far from the Denver downtown area is the Denver Zoological Gardens where, if you visit a replica African savannah they've recreated, you'll see predators like lions and hyenas. You'll also have a chance to see termite mounds in the Kenyan Preserve, where insects are dispersed for local mongoose. In all, the zoo presents over 700 species. A train ride through the zoological gardens will bring you to exotic animals like the majestic black rhinos, the colorful coral reef fish, and the intimidating king cobra snakes.
For something a little more delicate, consider a visit to the Butterfly Pavilion, located a short distance to the north. Finger-length zebra longwings and hand-sized paper kites join more than 50 species of butterflies calling this 5-acre beautiful place home. For those interested in veering a bit astray from the beauty and fragility of our fluttery friends, there's the rose-haired tarantula, Madagascar hissing cockroaches, and the giant mealworm, all available for touching and feeling…if you dare!
Zoos in Cheyenne, Wyoming
Finally, if you're near the northern end of the eastern Colorado Rockies region, you'll want to visit the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, in Cheyenne, Wyoming's capital city. This natural environment is a great stop for families and showcases animals from the Rockies region, including moose, mountain lion, grizzly bear, lynx, bald eagles, and river otter. Kids and parents alike will love the antique carousel! You'll also receive the satisfaction of knowing that you visited the country's only mountain-top zoo!
