Shoot the whitewater rapids of the Arkansas River's Bighorn Canyon. Challenge the 45 miles of Class II-III, (III-IV below Pinnacle Rock) rapids, this river is a favorite of seniors and families with young children. These sections, Salida to Cotopaxi and Cotopaxi to Parkdale, are located in Fremont County, at Salida, intersection of 291 and Hwy 50.

Practical Info: Rafting season is open approximately from May to September, with whitewater rafting trips ranging in length from a half day to a full day. Popular trips include the 23 mile section from Salida to Cotopaxi, and the 22 mile section from Cotopaxi to Parkdale. The river is suitable for paddle rafts, oar rafts, inflatable kayaks, and dories.

Useful Tips: Guides are optional, although permits may be required for private trips. Outfitters on the Arkansas River's Bighorn Canyon offer trips suitable for families.

Expect to See: Ducks and geese in an environment of canyons, and mountains.
