The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad was built in 1881 to serve as the transportation route between Durango and the historic gold mining town of Silverton and to haul silver and gold into the San Juan Mountains. Construction of the narrow gauge railroad was completed in an astonishingly short year with the help of about 500 men and under the direction of General William Palmer. The challenge of its construction and now the beauty of its existence is its location on the side of the gorge in the region. The old steam locomotives that were used originally are now housed in one of the D&SNGR museums, but the historic railroad is still one of the very few in the country that still runs on vintage coal-fired steam engines today.
Visitors can take part in this experience by taking the ride from Durango to Silverton. Reservations are required and the train runs only from May through October. Tours and meals can also be arranged in either of the towns. Prices vary according choice of class (i.e. premium class seating is a bit more expensive) and can range from $100-$175. The hosts and hostesses onboard are extremely knowledgeable and friendly and make it their business to ensure your trip is a memorable one.
There are two museums at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, where guests can see historic locomotives and railway equipment, as well as visit the D&SNGR gift shop. Here you'll learn about the rich history of the railroad, how it was built, how the steam engines worked, and more.
Look familiar? That could be because you've seen the Durango & Silverton train in the old 1950s western "A Ticket to Tomahawk," in James Stewart's "Night Passage", or in the more modern "The Prestige."
Enjoy the scenic ride on the historic route from Durango to Silverton!
