Visit the 2.3 million acre White River National Forest, the top recreation Forest in the U.S., nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Home to world-renowned ski resorts and the birthplace of American wilderness, White River National Forest has something to offer the pickiest of people.
White River National Forest, one of the largest and oldest national forests in the Rocky Mountains, is dedicated to outdoor recreation. Located in north central Colorado, this forest is a major corridor for ski resorts. In addition to winter sports such as downhill and cross-country skiing, the forest offers great summertime activities such as boating, fishing, camping, horseback riding, bicycling, hiking, and more. And for those looking for the perfect, picturesque fall, look no further - the changing aspens with their awesome golden hue, are a must see, especially in late September.
In addition to lodges and hotels in Breckenridge, Dillon and beyond, there are several campgrounds around Dillon Reservoir as well as numerous backcountry and dispersed camping options for those who want to spend the night. Most of the campgrounds are between 5,400 and 10,000 feet high, so folks coming from lower elevations should be aware that some time is needed to adjust to the higher elevations.
