One of the focuses of this high-altitude southern Colorado park is water. Lots of it. The Blue Mesa Reservoir, which is Colorado's largest water source, Morrow Point Reservoir, and Crystal Reservoir are all contained within Curecanti. The Cimarron Canyon Rail exhibit, Gunnison Tunnel, and major recent archeological findings help visitors learn about the park's recent and not-so-recent past (people have inhabited the area for more than 10,000 years).
Summer activities usually involve the water (whether its fishing for trout, swimming in the cold water, or hopping into a boat) while popular winter sports include ice fishing, ice skating, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing.
From Curecanti National Recreation Area - Colorado:
Blue Mesa Reservoir is Colorado's largest body of water, and is the largest Kokanee Salmon fishery in the United States. Morrow Point Reservoir is the beginning of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and below, Crystal Reservoir is the site of the Gunnison Diversion Tunnel, a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. Recently discovered dinosaur fossils, a 5,000 acre archeological district, a narrow gauge train, and traces of 6000 year old dwellings further enhance the offerings of Curecanti.
