It's tough to match the unique features of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. This treacherously steep, dark canyon formed of pre-Cambrian rock plunges 2,000 feet to the rushing Gunnison River. There are many breathtaking overlooks offering incredible views of the canyon landscape. A drive along one of the park's scenic roads may be the easiest way to take in the gorgeous vistas but there are also some easy nature hikes, like the Rim Rock Nature Trail. Inner-canyon hikes, while rewarding, are very physically strenuous and require a special permit from the park. Fantastic fishing can be found in the glittering Gunnison River. Kayaking and rafting down the Gunnison are not recommended for amateurs.
From Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park - Colorado:
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison's unique and spectacular landscape was formed slowly by the action of water and rock scouring down through hard Proterozoic crystalline rock. No other canyon in North America combines the narrow opening, sheer walls, and startling depths offered by the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.
