Public Recreational Parks in Vail, Aspen, Telluride, Steamboat Springs, CO Rockies

Things to do / Travel Guide

When the family has had its fill of forays into the Colorado Rockies' great wide and wild open, the tame, trimmed lawns of a public park can provide pleasantly predictable play and fun. Riverside playgrounds, spacious green lawns, and smooth, concrete skate parks will address your aspirations for a day of quiet picnics, Frisbee, or a pickup game of sports.

Public Parks in the Colorado Rockies

There is a wide selection of public parks to choose from in Northwest Colorado's Grand Junction. Lincoln Park, for instance, with expansive grassy lawns, tall trees, picnic areas, and a very good playground, is one of the town's best. Salida, in South-Central Colorado, also has a great selection of parks: Riverside Park, on the Arkansas River has open green spaces and places to watch whitewater kayakers row past, and Alpine Park has a good-sized playground and a small green field for ball chasing and Frisbee. If you are spending the day in the Southwest Colorado town of Ouray, try the luxuriant green grass field and playground near U.S. Highway 550. In Telluride (Southwest Colorado) you and the kids can take advantage of the Telluride Town Park located on the San Juan River - you can spread out a blanket for a picnic or play some volleyball, tennis, or basketball, while the little ones fish in the small lake or hone their gross motor skills on the playground equipment. Swings and slides and cottonwoods add to the riverside scenery at Durango's public park, also in Southwest Colorado, perfectly positioned on the banks of the Animas River. While your children happily expend excess energy, you can sit on a bench and let your thoughts wander as you watch the river rafters drifting by.

Skate Parks in the Colorado Rockies

With Colorado Rockies' skate parks your kids won't need snow to style and throw tricks. The Colorado Rockies region is rolling right with the punches when it comes to the great skateboarding, rollerblading, and trick biking trends that have swept the nation.
One of the premier skate parks in the country, the Rio Grande State Park, on Aspen's Mill Street in Northwest Colorado, is a great place for the kids to work their wheels. Located on a cliff over the Colorado River, Grand Junction's Eagle Rim Park and Skatepark and Westlake Skatepark on Orchard Avenue (also in Northwest Colorado) have ramps, rails, and bowls that will suit all levels of wheeled wunderkids. Telluride Town Park, in the Southwest Colorado town of Telluride, also has a skatepark, where kids of all ages can pop wheelies and exhibit their best stunts to the wide-eyed spectators who cheer them on.
