Our Sports Superfan Says:
Each summer, in the historic city of Newport, fans can take in some word-class tennis along with ceremonies honoring tennis greats. On the grounds of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships lead up to the induction ceremony, and conclude in a weekend celebrating tennis.
The tournament, played by some of the top men's professionals, takes place in the middle of July, with the induction ceremony taking place on Saturday night before the Sunday finals. Coming right after Wimbledon, the tournament is one of a few on the professional tour to be played on grass, and the only remaining professional grass tournament in North America.
In addition to the tournament, the Hall of Fame offers year-round admission to its museum, a shrine to tennis greats past and present, between the hours of 9:30am and 5:00pm every day, except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Group tours can also be arranged, with discount rates available. There are also "court tennis" facilities, in addition to the more conventional tennis courts at the Hall of Fame.
Located in downtown Newport, the International Tennis Hall of Fame is located on the grounds of what was once the Newport Casino, an important social building. It is the home of the first ever United States National Championships in tennis. The site is accessible via mass transit on RIPTA's yellow line.
