Step inside the Boston's Wilbur Theatre and you'll be stepping into a slice of theatrical history. The theater was built in 1914 and since has been a cornerstone of American theatrical performances. From its earliest days it hosted landmark productions including Thornton Wilder's Our Town (1938), Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire (1947), and Eugene O'Neill's A Long Day's Journey into Night (1956). Huge stars made their entrance into the world of theater at the Wilbur, including Marlon Brando (in his acclaimed performance in Streetcar), and others made their grand exits, like Katharine Cornell in Dear Liar in 1960. Others who have graced the stage at the Wilbur Theatre include Ethel Barrymore, Fred Astaire, Jessica Tandy, and Brian Bedford and in more modern times, Faye Dunaway, Marisa Tomei, and Quentin Tarantino.
In 2008 the Wilbur was sold to the Comedy Connection and as such will begin hosting comedy performances that were previously hosted at the Quincy Market location. As the new home of comedy, the Wilbur Theatre is now the first comedy theater in the country.
The Wilbur Theatre is located in the historic theater district on Tremont Street in Boston, Massachusetts.
