Our Museum Expert Says:

Visit the oldest surviving 17th century wooden mansion in New England. Filled with 330 years of history, the House of the Seven Gables will give visitors a Salem experience that's second to none.

Built in 1668, the House of the Seven Gables was the inspiration for Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel of the same name. Hawthorne's birth home was later actually moved next to the famous house. Also called the Turner-Ingersoll mansion, visitors to the House can also explore more than 2,000 artifacts and objects, more than 40 framed works, 500 photographs and glass plate negatives, and more than 650 books. If you haven't read the novel, never fear; the audiovisual program at the House will tell you the whole story. Kids will love the haunted house feel the guides give to visitors as they tour through the House and its surroundings. Outside the house there are beautiful seaside gardens, an 18th century granite sea wall, and two seaside Colonial Revival Gardens.

The House of the Seven Gables is located at 115 Derby Street in Salem, and there are plenty of restaurants and pubs nearby for lunch or dinner, so clear the afternoon and get ready for some spooky history at the House of Seven Gables.
