Come to the Mystic Seaport Museum in the town of Mystic, Connecticut, for an interactive adventure into America's seafaring past!
,The Mystic Seaport Museum, the world's largest maritime museum, has something to offer all ages. The museum is comprised of four parts. Visitors to the Mystic Seaport Museum can climb aboard and explore tall ships and other historic vessels at the waterfront. There is a re-created 19th-century village, complete with friendly and knowledgeable "villagers" dressed in period costume. At the preservation shipyard, guests can observe the restoration of antique vessels using traditional methods and tools. Finally, the Mystic Seaport Museum has a diverse selection of formal exhibits and galleries, as well as a planetarium. Children under seven can dress in sailor's garb and swab the deck at the Children's Museum.
As early as the 1600s, the Mystic region of New England was a center of shipbuilding. When the spread of steamships and railroads made wooden ships and boats obsolete and the nation's seafaring traditions began to disappear, three Mystic residents decided to work together to keep the past alive. In addition to its array of authentic antique ships, the Mystic Seaport Museum also boasts logbooks, photography, ship's plans, and other maritime artifacts. After its founding in 1929, historic buildings from across New England were transported to the Mystic Seaport Museum to complement the growing collection of ships, creating the coastal village of Mystic Seaport as it stands today.
The Mystic Seaport Museum is located about 10 miles east of New London in Connecticut's "Ocean Corner" - part of the Mystic Places region. The entrance to the museum is located on Route 27, off of Exit 90 on I-95. Amtrak trains serve Mystic and New London daily, and Long Island residents can reach New London via Cross Sound Ferry.
