Founded in 1936 as a laboratory and museum for modern art and new techniques, today the museum presents art in all media including music, film, video, and performance. The institute developed a reputation for identifying important new artists and is a real testament to Boston society.

Much of the institute's collection is a diverse mix of national and international artworks ranging in styles and media; however all have one thing in common, namely being some of the best contemporary art in the world.

Among the artists whose work is displayed at the Institute of Contemporary Art are Georges Braque, Oskar Kokoschka, Edvard Munch, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Laurie Anderson, and Roy Lichtenstein. Recent artists include Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, Carol Rama, Vanessa Beecroft, Kara Walker, Cildo Meireles, Ellen Gallagher, Tony Oursler, Cindy Sherman, Bill Viola, Rachel Whiteread, Janine Antoni, and Cornelia Parker. In addition to the permanent collection, the Institute of Contemporary Art also hosts special temporary exhibitions.

Public transportation to the institute of Contemporary Art is quick and effective. Take the Red Line to South Station. From there take the Silver Line to the World Trade Center stop. Exit left onto Congress Street. Walk one block to the corner of B Street and turn right, crossing Congress Street. Follow B Street for one block. At the corner of B Street and Seaport Boulevard cross the street and turn left. At the next corner, turn right onto Northern Avenue. The Institute of Contemporary Art is on the right.
