Built in 1640, New Bedford eventually became one of the largest whaling villages on the eastern seaboard. By 1859, however, with the discovery of petroleum, the whaling industry began to decline, as there was less demand for whale oil. The whaling industry in New Bedford came to a halt in 1925. In 1996, 34 acres of New Bedford, spread over 13 blocks, and were established as the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park.
Today, visitors to the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park can embark on guided tours of the site, or go on self-guided tours of the New Bedford Whaling Museum, the Seamen's Bethel, or the Working Waterfront. The guided tours of the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park usually last about one hour. The New Bedford Whaling Museum, the world's largest whaling museum, examines the history, culture and science of whaling in New Bedford. The Seamen's Bethel serves as a memorial to whalers and fishermen who have lost their lives at sea, as well as a nondenominational chapel still serving the seafaring community of New Bedford. Finally, the Working Waterfront, the essence of New Bedford and the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, offers a first-hand view into the mechanics of the city's booming fishing industry. To get to the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, visitors should take I-95 to I-195 East from Providence, then take exit 15. Turn right on Elm Street. Bring the whole family to the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park and have a whale of a good time!
