Our History Buff Says:

Visit the oldest presidential birthplaces in the United States at the Adams National Historical Park! The park is also home to the Stone Library which contains more than 14,000 historic volumes, known as the first presidential library. Adams National Historical Park is a true American historical treasure.

Adams National Historical Park tells the story of four generations of the Adams family and has two main sites: the Birthplaces of 2nd U.S. President John Adams and 6th U.S. President John Quincy Adams, and the "Old House," home to four generations of the Adams family. The Stone Library, also on site, contains more than 14,000 historic volumes, a true gem for the bibliophile history lover. The United First Parish Church is also on the premises and is the holding spot for the Adams family crypt, where both John Adams and his wife and John Quincy Adams and his wife are all entombed. History buffs will enjoy the impressive collection of original artifacts found inside the Old House, which also includes a historic orchard and an 18th-century style formal garden which contains thousands of beautiful annual and perennial flowers—make sure you take a few moments (or longer!) to walk through the area and enjoy the fruits and flowers that the Adams families enjoyed over 200 years ago!

The off-site visitor center is located within one mile of the historic structures and offers regularly scheduled tours of the Adams' homes; they also provide a trolley bus that offers transportation between the sites. Note: In order to enter the historic homes, you must be on a guided tour (approximately 2 hours)—tours are operated on a first-come, first-serve basis, so make sure you stop by the visitor center as soon as you get to the area, before you start exploring the area on your own.

To get to the Adams National Historical Park from Boston and Route 128, take U.S. Interstate 93 southbound or Route 128 to exit 7/Route 3 (south to Braintree and Cape Cod). Take exit 18 off Route 3 to Washington Street and the Quincy Adams T. Follow signs towards Quincy Center. You'll have a great time at Adams National Historical Park—whether you spend your day walking through the orchards, perusing through the library, or taking the tours through the houses, you'll walk away from the site knowing more about our great presidents and knowing more about New England history. Have fun!
