Napatree Point Beach, is just over the Connecticut / Rhode Island border on the coast of the Block Island Sound, in Napatree Point, Rhode Island in the town of Westerly, RI. The beach is located on Napatree Point, a peninsula that forms the western-most point in Rhode Island and juts out into the Block Island Sound. Follow the beach a mile and a half to the very end and you will find what is left of Fort Mansfield, which protected New York City from enemies coming by sea. Some of the gun emplacements can still be seen.
At the western entrance to the beach is the upscale area of Watch Hill. Explore the historic district, visit the shops and just stroll around the compact, yet luxurious areas of town. Enjoy the local seafood at the Olympic Tea Room or other local restaurants. After a nice meal, stroll south to the southern tip of the peninsula for a view of the still-functioning Watch Hill Lighthouse. The lighthouse is closed but the views are great and the walk is definitely worth the detour. If you enjoy fishing, Watch Hill may be the place for you, as well.
Visitors to destinations near Westerly, Rhode Island, such as Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut and Mystic, CT will find Napatree Beach one of the best between Boston and New York. The beach is less than a half hour away from both. Coming from New York, Napatree Point makes a convenient beach stop about 2 hours out of New York. Then you can keep on going to Cape Cod.
