Cockle Cove and Hardings Beach, located on Massachusetts's Sequetucket Harbor in the town of Chatham, MA, are perfect family destinations. Two separate beaches, Hardings Beach is the largest family beach on the Lower Cape and Cockle Cove Beach is suited for families and is a good spot for windsurfing, as well. Both Sequetucket Harbor beaches are in West Chatham, Cockle Cove is to the west of Bucks Creek Marshes and Hardings Beach is to the east. Both beaches have parking facilities close by. Chatham is located at the eastern end of the Lower Cape, about an hour and 45 minutes drive from Boston and under an hour from Provincetown. If you are doing this on a summer weekend, as we suspect, times will probably be longer.
Hardings Beach in Chatham is a great place for beach sports, including volleyball and beach bocce. Hiking trails from the beach lead to the lighthouse after about one mile of leisurely hiking. Cockle Beach is less crowded and a bit more popular with local kayakers. Both beaches are a bit weak on concession stands, so it might be a good idea to load up on snacks and drinks before parking.
After some time on the beach consider exploring some of the local attractions. Nickerson State park is in nearby Brewster, MA and the Brooks Academy Museum is to the west in Harwich. Also in Harwich, Bud's Go-Karts is a great place for the kids to let off some more energy.
