Things to do / Travel Guide
Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island have a number of good wineries to visit, and sampling the region's wines, and liqueurs produced from fruit, berries, honey, and flowers, is a unique treat. The wineries specialize not only in wines, but also in other fine culinary preparations well-known in the region, granting the customer a full sensual experience.
Plymouth Wineries
Plymouth - One of the largest wineries in the region is Plymouth Winery, where vintner John Lebeck has been producing award-winning wines for nearly four decades. Try his signature 10% cranberry wine. Aside for the months of January and February, the winery is open for visitors throughout the year.
Cape Cod Wineries
Cape Cod - The vineyard at Cape Cod Winery, founded in 1994, features grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Grigio, and Seyval. You can taste and purchase their wines on weekends throughout the year save for the wintertime.
Martha's Vineyard Wineries
Martha's Vineyard was named in the 17th century by its discoverer, as both his daughter and his mother-in-law were named Martha. He saw lots of wild grapes growing there, but not actually any vineyards. More recently there really have been planted vineyards on the island, the most famous of which being Chicama Vineyards, founded in 1971. The winery offers variety wines, such as a rich Viognier and a vibrant Merlot, as well as blends, such as their Oceanus, a mixture of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. In addition to its fine wines, the winery produces a variety of foods, including wine vinegars, mustards, chutneys, and jams. The season for tours is from May 24th to October 13th, although wine tasting is available in the shop all year long.
Nantucket Wineries
Nantucket - Nantucket Vineyard may be small, but it produces ten varieties of wine for sampling and purchasing. During the summer, Nantucket Vineyard opens its doors daily to visitors, but during the winter visitors are asked to telephone before they come. It's also located next to the Triple Eight Distillery, which produces famous Triple Eight Vodka.
Rhode Island Wineries
Rhode Island - Sakonnet Vineyards, located in Little Compton, Rhode Island is the region's oldest and largest winery and one of its best. At the winery's hospitality center, which is open daily throughout the year, you might get to sample its 2002 Gewürztraminer - a “Best of Show” at the international Monterey Wine Competition.
