Things to do / Travel Guide

The very thought of a walk along the Cape Cod National Seashore should be enough to get you in a romantic mood. Think of what a memory of such an experience would make! Whether it's for a honeymoon, an anniversary, or for a spontaneous romantic getaway, now's the time to make that very thought a reality - do it for yourselves, do it for the memory.

Of course, don't think your romantic excursion need end at the seashore. All of Cape Cod, the great city of Boston, and Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay - the region of coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island - are there for the rose picking.
Quaint inns and bed and breakfasts abound, set on gorgeous other seashores; the seafood-based cuisine is the perfect thing to frame a romantic day trip. Beautiful coastal walks and yacht rides serve as fruitful activities throughout the region.

Romantic Getaways around Boston, Massachusetts

Up in Boston you'll find excellent romantic dining spots. One favorite area is Beacon Hill, a neighborhood of gas-lit streetlights and Georgian-style row houses. A great pick for a romantic evening is a meal at 75 Chestnut, a restaurant with a strong American cuisine. Sit in your own well-lit booth against a window overlooking the pretty street. This is a good place for desserts and wine, as well.

Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island is a great place for romantic walks, in parks and along the seaside. Boston Common, contiguous with Beacon Hill and the celebrated Public Garden, forms the starting point of the Emerald Necklace, six miles of public parks considered some of the best in the nation.

Romantic Getaways in the Cape Cod Area and the Islands

Ask anyone and they'll tell you: Chatham is the place to be on Cape Cod. Ask those same people and they'll probably tell you to stay at the Bradford of Chatham, an inn of exceptional quality. The grounds are 150 years old, built in the Colonial style. You can overlook Oyster Pond from your suite, relax in your own large Jacuzzi, or sit in front of the roaring fire. Outside, take a walk down Main Street for great window shopping by art galleries and boutiques of all kinds.

The Islands - Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket - might be a bit hard to get to, but it's worth it just for the yacht ride out. If seclusion is what you're looking for, you should head to the Pickett House Bed and Breakfast. The grounds, a converted farm house, date to the 18th century and provide for numerous beach walks, probably among the best you'll ever have a chance to take. Nearby sit Moshup Beach, Gay Head Cliffs, and the Head Lighthouse. Add in a lovely sunset and the beautiful Cape weather, and you two are in for a wonderful time. Surrounding the house are flower gardens and green lawns.

At your stay at the Pickett House's cottage, a made-up beach shack with a fireplace, you'll want to head to town for a taste of some Martha's Vineyard cooking. Sit down for a nice breakfast, lunch, or dinner at Among the Flowers, an outdoor café specializing in food that just … relaxes you. Good soups are the order of the day, like crab chowders and lobster bisque soup. The ingredients are all local.

Of course, the ultimate in beach walks is the Cape Cod National Seashore, where the water takes on an iridescent quality for mile after mile. It's also mile after mile of small ponds, forests, and those quaint and small Cape Cod houses. In a clearing in the woods near the water, you'll come across the haunting Nauset Light, one of New England's most famous lighthouses.

Romantic Getaways in Rhode Island

A romantic getaway in Newport takes full advantage of the city's large amount of Colonial homes. These neighborhoods are some of the most picturesque in America, and with so many stately houses over 150 years old, you can imagine how many bed and breakfasts there must be. Victorians, Colonials, and Greek Revivals all abound. The pick of the litter, rated time and again from various sources as some of the country's most romantic, is Adele Turner Inn. This Victorian offering, bound by almost 30 arched windows, contains rooms stuffed with antiques and memorabilia celebrating the sea. Stick around for the daily and complimentary wine and food pairings arranged by the sommelier.

Providence is another city with much romantic potential, this time thanks to its partly Italian origin. Take a gondola down the Providence River or head down to the marina for some bay romance. At dinnertime, make your way to Capriccio for excellent food and ambience. This is international dining with accents of northern Italy, the chef offering such masterpieces as beef stroganoff, Dover sole, and veal parmigiana. This is the perfect place for a candlelit dinner, with excellent service to boot. More great romantic Italian experiences can be had at Camille's, the standard-bearer since before World War I, and Al Forno, where you can order a scrumptious pumpkin-stuffed lasagna.

As Newport has been known for its opulent mansions dating to the Gilded Age, one wonderful activity for you two is a stroll along the Cliff Walk. This path exposes you to some of the best of the lot, granting moving scenes of, among others, the Breakers, built by the architecture-loving Vanderbilts in the late 19th century. Of course, you also get stunning views of Narragansett Bay and Conanicut Island.

A great way to conclude a romantic getaway is by air - before the plane trip back to the day to day, take a hot air balloon ride. Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island grants fantastic views from above, and a gentle ride in a balloon is just the way to do it. Explore the lovely bays below and see other lands far out into the distance. It's a visual feast, a perfect experience with a loved one. See all of Rhode Island in one panoramic sweep! It'll give you ideas for your next trip to the region.
