Public Recreational Parks in Boston, Cape Cod, Newport, Coastal MA and RI

Things to do / Travel Guide

When the kids need a break from sightseeing in Boston, a good place to go is either the Public Garden or Boston Common. The two parks are located across the street from each other in the Beacon Hill neighborhood and are easily reachable by subway.

The Public Garden's main attraction is its tribute to “Make Way for Ducklings.” The larger-than-life statutes of Mrs. Mallard and her ducklings are made for little people to sit on, and they take great joy in doing so.

If your kids' tastes tend more toward frogs, head to the Boston Common and its Frog Pond. During the summer, make sure to bring along bathing suits and towels, since the kids are allowed to splash about in the pond. In the winter, the pond is turned into a skating rink.

Next to the Frog Pond is the Tadpole Playground, where the kids can run around and enjoy the various frog and tadpole sculptures.

If the kids get tired of building sandcastles near Newport, head for Brenton Point State Park, where kite flyers of all ages congregate to launch their kites and enjoy a barbeque (the park provides the grills, but you provide your own food).
