One of the fun things about coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island is that even your accommodations can be an exciting part of your visit. Quaint bed and breakfasts (B&Bs), dramatic waterfront 5-star hotels, and camping under the stars are some of the options. Just remember that during the peak summer months of July and August, you will need to book ahead of time at most of the more popular places.
Hotels around Boston, Massachusetts
In the bigger cities, such as Boston and Providence, top luxury hotels are available in the downtown districts close to the attractions, and near the airport and are priced accordingly. The luxury hotels offer impeccable service and world-class restaurants, and cost between $300 and $500. There is a good selection of mid-range hotels as well, located in just the same areas.
Hotels on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket come in a variety of settings, and most of them have the unique charm that's associated with the region. They are often built in the same styles as the indigenous residences. In terms of price, they run to about $300. There isn't much in this region outside the large cities in terms of major hotels, actually, because the most popular accommodations on the coast and the islands are the inns and B&Bs.
Hostels and Motels around Boston, Massachusetts
As an alternative to staying in a Boston hotel, you can find good hostels in the city's downtown in strategic locations, and they go for between $25 and $40. In Newport there's the William Gyles Guesthouse, which has shared rooms for less than $20. It's located at 16 Howard Street, south of West Memorial Boulevard. In terms of motels, you can find them off all the major highways and interstates, for reasonable prices and conditions.
Inns and B&Bs around Boston, Massachusetts
There are excellent B&Bs in Boston's Beacon Hill, many of which run for between $75 to $200. From Beacon Hill you can make excursions to Boston's Historic District, or pass the time in the area, which boasts excellent historic architecture and a flavor of its own.
The B&Bs that you can find all the way up the coast give visitors an opportunity to get to know some of the local residents, since they're usually within someone's home. The comfortable rooms are furnished with antiques, the breakfasts are satisfying, and the proprietors are usually willing to share their knowledge and stories about the particular area they're in. Rates run the gamut from $100 to $350 - obviously the more expensive are usually nicer or better located, but the cheaper ones are quite nice too. It could even be that the particular style you find ideal for is less money, rather than more.
Camping/Cabin Rentals around Boston, Massachusetts
You can camp on some of the Boston Harbor Islands during the summer season. Nothing is provided, so you must bring all of your own supplies - including drinking water and food - and you need to reserve beforehand and pay a fee. Out on the Cape and the Vineyard and Nantucket, there are many well-equipped places to set up your camping gear, including the 420 campsites located on the Cape's Nickerson State Park.
On Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket there are self-catering cottages and cabins for rent, where you can make your own barbeque on the beach or enjoy a morning cup of coffee from your front porch. Often they come with full kitchens. The rates change whether you come in-season or off-season; for off-season it costs around $100, and for in-season it's up to $180. Some of these are completely closed for the winter months.
The Casinos in Connecticut
There are three hotels at the Foxwoods Resort Casino. The 800-room Grand Pequot Tower and the 312-room Great Cedar Hotel are attached to the casino. The 280-room Two Trees Inn is located on the opposite side of Route 2. Regular shuttles drive the inn's guests to the rest of the casino resort. Two Trees is slightly cheaper, with rooms averaging around $200.
The Mohegan Sun Casino's 34-story, 1,200-room hotel, which is connected to the casino, is Connecticut's second-tallest building. Rooms can go for $200 and up. If you need a place in the Mohegan area a little less pricey, you can check in to the Best Western, located in neighboring Uncasville, in which there are hotels with rooms for less.
