Things to do / Travel Guide

New Englanders are known for making their points with as few words as possible. So we honor that cultural quality with the following descriptions of some of the coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island region's excellent golf offerings. Indeed, there are a plethora of places at which to putt for par.

If you're on Martha's Vineyard you'll enjoy majestic views all around at Farm's Neck. You might enjoy them even more in the spring and fall after the summer prices have dropped off a bit. But any way you slice it, this is the best course on the island.

The Pinehills Rees Jones Course is known for breathtaking topography and challenging golf.

If you like wide forgiving fairways and large undulating greens, you'll love Waverly Oaks.

Here's the word on George Wright Municipal: Success will depend on the precision of your shots. Do that, and you'll have fun without breaking your bank.

Make sure you're in good shape if you're walking because you'll be trekking over hills at Blackstone National. Fortunately, the views are as breathtaking as the shots are fun.

Don't let the short length fool you at Triggs Memorial. If the water doesn't get you, the bunkers will, and if you stay out of the sand, you'll have to miss the rough too.

Strong winds at Montaup might crimp your style, but the stunning views will make up for it.

At Newport National, being so close to the water gives the course a links-style design as well as introducing winds which change from day to day. Relatively open fairways and large greens make this course a pleasure for golfers of all skill levels.

Exeter Golf and Country Club. It just sounds right. Enjoy a relaxing country experience at what many call one of the best “courses in Rhode Island.” Golfers of all abilities will enjoy the rolling fairways and scenic views.

Many hills and curves add to a challenge at Winnapaug that is amplified by the undulating greens. This is typical of the courses designed by Donald Ross, with trees lining the fairways, many doglegs, and small greens.

You can step into history at Shennecossett. First opened in 1898 with a four-hole layout, this is probably one of the oldest golf courses you'll ever play. Don't worry though, many renovations have gone into the course over the years.
