Things to do / Travel Guide
With all that sand and water, Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island is a great place for kids to have a fun time. But don't discount the historical sites, many of which offer activities especially designed for kids. These can provide fun and interesting ways to spend an afternoon.

Boston, for example, offers a shortened version of its Freedom Trail, designed specially for little feet. Still-growing fish lovers will love the giant fishbowl at the New England Aquarium. Its three-story cylindrical saltwater tank, filled with more than 600 swirling creatures from the sea, is a child's favorite and surreal for adults. For baseball fans young and old, there's Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. The tour of the park includes a walk out on the baseball field.
Historical sites, such as the USS Constitution docked in Boston Harbor, and the living history museums at Plimoth Plantation (in Plymouth, Massachusetts) and Mystic Seaport, Connecticut, are places that make history come alive. These are perfect for giving kids a hands-on look at what life was like back in the early days of the country.
Kids are definitely welcome on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. In addition to whale-watching and seal-watching tours, there are fishing and kayaking trips designed for the entire family. A 35-year favorite for locals and tourists alike on Cape Cod has been Bud's Go-Karts. It's located in Harwich Port, and you and the kids can drive the go-carts or try any of the other amusement-park-type attractions.
Last but definitely not least are the beaches. There are many to choose from, but be aware that some have better public facilities than others. So if your kids like to combine swimming with a trip to the snack bar for an ice cream, check out the beach's facilities before you go. One of the best beaches is Coast Guard Beach, near Eastham. On Martha's Vineyard, near Menemsha Harbor, is Menemsha Beach - another great beach for kids.
Rhode Island - Vacation for Kids
In Rhode Island, may we suggest a mansion for your children's delight? It's called Green Animals Topiary Garden. Although it's located about 30 minutes away in Portsmouth, it is worth the drive. On the estate are 80 very large and very green sculptures of animals cut from California privet, yew, and boxwood, including a life-sized green elephant. The mansion isn't nearly as opulent as the ones in Newport, but the second floor is home to a collection of antique toys.
Southeast Connecticut - Vacation for Kids
If your visit to the region includes a stay at Foxwood Resort Casino, take the casino's shuttle to the nearby Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center, where the kids will learn all about this fascinating tribal nation.
The “Kids Quest” at the Mohegan Sun Casino can keep the kiddies occupied while the parents are having their fun. The center has licensed child care professionals who supervise children aged six weeks to twelve years old. Some of the activities include “Barbieland” and the “Construction Quarry,” where kids get to crawl and climb and jump through the tunnels, tubes, and chutes.
