Cruises and Boating in Boston, Cape Cod, Newport, Coastal MA and RI

Things to do / Travel Guide

With so many inlets, islands, bays, and rivers, Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island is a haven for all kinds of water-related recreation.

Swan Boats at Boston Public Garden

If you're still a kid at heart, head for the pond in the Boston Public Garden, at the northern end of the Emerald Necklace. There you'll find the Swan Boats, a 130-year-old Boston institution that is still drawing the crowds. Guides do the paddling and the tour is only about 15 minutes long, but how often do you get to sail the waters in a boat decorated like a swan?

Boat Rides around Boston Harbor

For a trip down the Charles River or around the Boston Harbor by riverboat, try the Charles Riverboat Company, the only riverboat company in Boston. The company offers both private charters and narrated sightseeing excursions. To get to the port, which is located at the Cambridgeside Galleria Mall, take the Green Line to Lechmere Square in East Cambridge. A cruise along the city costs around $10.

Cruises around Boston, Massachusetts

There actually happen to be many companies offering cruises departing from the harbor. You can catch cruises from Boston to all the way up the coast to Cape Ann, and to Provincetown on Cape Cod. There are whale-watching and lighthouse tours, and even sunset tours for the romantically-inclined. A large company for these types of water activities is Boston Harbor Cruises; trip rates around the harbor are comparable to those of the Charles Riverboat Company, while farther-away cruises can be more like $50 a person.

Hiring Private Yachts around Newport, Rhode Island

If you've always wanted to charter your own private yacht, Newport, Rhode Island is a great place to do it. Since Newport is a former home of the America's Cup Yachting Race, you can experience the thrill of sailing your yacht along the original course. There are more than a dozen yacht companies around the city that will give you a scenic two-hour tour of Narragansett Bay and Newport Harbor.
Rates for these excursions are between $100 and $250 per person.
