Things to do / Travel Guide
If you love heights, and you want to catch a bird's eye view of coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island aside from the plane ride in, then you should consider these activities.
Adventure Travel around Boston, Massachusetts
The best way to see Boston and its surroundings from the air is by helicopter, of course. Take a ride with Helicopter Services Boston, which offers three separate tours of the coast and the Boston area. In the Eleven Lighthouses tour (30 min), you see just that number of lighthouses in Cape Ann, north of Boston. In the Best of Boston tour (30 min), catch a bird's-eye view of the Charles River and the Back Bay, and see the historic downtown as well as the skyscrapers. In the New England's Best tour (1 hour), see everything in the previous tour, then travel up the coast all the way to Cape Ann and check out that area - all at 130 miles an hour!
All departures and arrivals are at Beverly Municipal Airport (BVY), 30 miles north of Boston and right off Route 128. The rides cost $200 per person for a half-hour.
Adventure Travel around Rhode Island
If you're around Newport, Rhode Island, see the town and beaches from the air with Skydive Newport, a skydiving company located at the Newport State Airport. No experience is necessary to take the leap. A tandem, two-person jump is about $215 per person, and the airport is just five minutes away from town.
Bird's Eye View-RI Aerials offers a 15-minute tour of the Newport mansions. You get to check out the fabulous summer homes from above, with a bird's-eye view of downtown Newport, and also spy on gigantic aircraft carriers in the bay. The helicopter ride is $115 for two people. A custom tour for two people costs about $185, and it lasts around 25 minutes.
An even higher adventure is provided by a few ballooning companies, whose balloon trips will give you a panoramic view of this region's beautiful countryside. Well worth it, the cost is around $160 per person for an hour ride.
