Come to Kentucky for the only white water river that's accessible year round. The Cumberland River is also home to one of the largest waterfalls in the eastern U.S., and is also the only place in the Western Hemisphere where you can catch a moonbow, a rainbow produced by the moon instead of the sun.
The wild Cumberland River runs 687 miles through various points in Kentucky and Tennessee. The river's headwaters are in extreme southeastern Kentucky (Poor Fork in Letcher County and Martins Fork in Bell County), and its mouth is at Smithland, in Livingston County of western Kentucky. At certain points, Cumberland River runs through a mammoth rock gorge. Boulders lining the river mark the age-old head-ward erosion of the falls. The large waterfall is referred to "The Cumberland Below the Falls" by local paddlers. The white water run below the waterfall is one of the most popular runs in the state.
Cumberland River is home to miles of trophy trout waters virtually unknown to many fishermen. Because the Cumberland River is cold year round, the opportunity to catch trout is always there. The river also has many types of fly-fishing. Kayaking and canoeing are also very popular activities on Cumberland River.
Getting to Cumberland River will take you about 2 hours from the airport in Richmond, Kentucky. There's no public transport to the river.
