Our Sports Superfan Says:
Although its name comes from its corporate sponsor, Great American Ball Park has lived up to its billing in its first few years of existence. The only Major League stadium where you can actually hit a home run into another state, the Cincinnati Reds ballpark has been playing to rave reviews since its opening in 2003.
Located on the banks of the Ohio River, in the same location as the Reds' previous park, Riverfront Stadium/Cinergy Field, Great American Ball Park has won fans over with an array of amenities and visually pleasing elements. With the views of the river beyond right field, and the "Gap" allowing Cincinnatians to see the stadium through a hole in the stands along the third-base line, it is a great place to see into or look out of. There are fireworks from faux riverboats, large mosaics, monuments to the Reds' glorious past, and a huge scoreboard screen (baseball's third largest), all of which combine to make going to a Reds game a great experience.
If you're a home run aficionado, you'll really enjoy Great American Ball Park. Its short porches, and favorable atmospheric conditions, have made it one of the top home run stadiums since it opened. Furthermore, with the Ohio River, beyond right field being, mostly in Kentucky, it is possible to hit a home run into another state. Cincinnati's Adam Dunn did just that in 2004.
Tours of the ballpark are available on Saturdays, during the offseason, at 10 and 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., and daily during the season. Group tours are offered Tuesday to Saturday, and require two weeks advance reservation. The stadium is accessible via mass transit on the go*Metro bus, or by ferry from across the river in Kentucky.
