Mammoth Cave National Park is a both a World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve - and rightfully so. The park has earned the right to call itself the longest cave system in the world with over 360 miles (explored) of winding passages and tunnels. While exploring beneath the surface, you'll find mesmerizing cave popcorn, dripstone, draperies, and plenty of awesome examples of stalactites and stalagmites.
With about a dozen different cave touring options it would be hard not to find the right way to experience this awe-inspiring limestone labyrinth. The park recommends that you make a reservation ahead of time, especially in the busier months. Many of the most famous features of the cave, such as The Drapery Room, Grand Avenue, Frozen Niagara, and Fat Man's Misery, can be seen on tours varying from very short to up to six hours in length. For the Indiana Jones type, there are tour options to crawl on your belly through tight, dusty tunnels and muddy passageways. Really "wild" animals live in the park, such as incredibly bizarre eyeless fish, cave crickets, and more than 70 endangered or threatened species. Boating, hiking, and riverside camping are among the popular activities above ground.
