The rugged forests, ridges, arches, and plateaus of Big South Fork, along the Cumberland River, provide a giant playground for curious visitors and other creatures, great and small. The park houses Blue Heron, an abandoned coal mining town, several archeological sites, and more natural arches than any other region in the United States. In addition to exploring the fascinating cultural and ecological features of the park, visitors can also take advantage of the many recreational activities - canoeing, hiking, hunting, swimming, mountain biking, and fishing. Whitewater rafting and horseback riding are two other very popular activities in Big South Fork.

The free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and its tributaries pass through 90 miles of scenic gorges and valleys containing a wide range of natural and historic features. The area offers a broad range of recreational opportunities including camping, whitewater rafting, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, hunting and fishing.
