Our History Buff Says:

The Stones River National Battlefield was the site of one a very significant and very bloody Union army Civil War victory, around New Years Day, 1863. There were an estimated 23,500 casualties (with a majority of soldiers dying on the Union side). Union Major General William S. Rosencrans drove the Confederates out of the Murfreesboro area, pushing them toward Shelbysville, Tennessee. Stones River National Cemetery is the burial place of over 6100 Union soldiers, many of whom are unknown. There are marked walking trails and hikes through the nearby woods.
