Greyhound Lines provides service to many communities (both big and small) in the Central Kentucky and Tennessee region. The driving conditions both within and between towns is generally better than average, and you're quite likely to adopt that calm, polite demeanor so typical of the South. Notably, there is no rail service in the region.
By Car
Personal automobile is definitely the preferred mode of travel throughout the South, and the same goes for the Central Kentucky and Tennessee region. In terms of connectivity between the region's large cities, I-75 connects Lexington and Chattanooga, I-64 connects Louisville and Lexington, I-65 connects Louisville with Nashville, and I-24 connects Nashville and Chattanooga. The region also has many smaller, rural highways that are a great alternative to the Interstates if you want to soak in the countryside and some local flavor.
The following are approximate distances and driving times to and from the largest cities within the Central Kentucky and Tennessee region:
- Louisville to Lexington: 80 miles; 1 hour 15 minutes
- Louisville to Nashville: 175 miles; 3 hours
- Louisville to Chattanooga: 325 miles; 6.5 hours
- Nashville to Chattanooga: 135 miles; 2 hours
- Nashville to Lexington: 210 miles; 4.5 hours
- Chattanooga to Lexington: 280 miles; 4.5 hours
By Bus
All the major cities in the region have adequate bus service through their respective cities, and Greyhound Lines can transport you from one city to another throughout the region.
By Trolley
The motorized, brightly colored Toonerville II Trolleys are a great way to travel around downtown Louisville and to get to the Bardstown Road shopping and entertainment areas. The Nashville Trolley Co. offers a couple of trolleys: The Lunchtime Trolley will take you around downtown (runs only at lunchtime and is free); The Frist Arts Trolley runs a loop between Frist Arts Center, Vanderbilt Arts Center, the Parthenon, Centennial Park, and Belle Meade Mansion (twice daily, costs $1), and a third trolley, the 34X, runs out to Music Valley several times daily.
