Things to do / Travel Guide
The Central Kentucky and Tennessee region also has plenty to offer thrill-seeking travelers. Adventurers, or those aspiring to be, will find that adventure travel activities such as hang gliding, skydiving, hot air ballooning, and cave camping will add just the right amount of spice and spunk to your vacation.
Hang Gliding in Central Tennessee
Hang on for dear life as you glide on air - you will share the privileged perspective of our feathered friends as you get a bird's eye view of southern Tennessee and northern Georgia's rolling countryside. If you've never tried hang-gliding before, Lookout Mountain Flight Park's tandem flight will allow you to take off from Lookout Mountain and fly free like a falcon while buckled in with an instructor for safety. More-experienced hang gliders can rent gliders and set out on their own.
Skydiving in Central Kentucky and Tennessee
Check your pulse and then feel it jump as you tumble out of a plane for a Central Kentucky and Tennessee skydiving sensation. Skydiving is available in Bardstown, Frankfort, Lexington, and Louisville, in Kentucky, and near Nashville, Tennessee at the Tullahoma Regional Airport. You can try a tandem ride tethered to an instructor (freefall and parachute), a solo static-line skydive (a parachute fall from 3,500 feet), or, if you are already licensed, enjoy full freefall fun from 10,000 feet. Geronimo!
Hot Air Ballooning in Central Kentucky and Tennessee
“The winds have welcomed you with softness, the sun has blessed you with his warm hands …” You just may utter this balloonist's prayer before you lift off the land, skim the treetops, and peer down at a pretty patchwork quilt of farms, lakes, rivers, and cityscapes. In Central Kentucky and Tennessee beautiful balloons and baskets abound - hot air ballooning companies are available in Louisville, Versailles, and Lexington, Kentucky, as well as in Franklin and Nashville, Tennessee.
Wild Cave Adventures in Central Tennessee
Ghost stories become more ghoulish at the “wild cave” overnight adventure at Cumberland Caverns, southeast of McMinnville. You'll spend a harrowing (but completely safe) 14 hours exploring underground passageways and crawlspaces and then, finally, sleeping overnight in a dark, dank cave. Adults and courageous children are welcome year-round - the cave overnights are very popular, so be sure to make reservations ahead of time.
