Snake River - Hells Canyon Whitewater Rafting

Things to do / Travel Guide

Expert White Water Rafting Review

Experience the whitewater of the Snake River's Hells Canyon. Shoot the 83 miles of Class III-IV rapids, suitable for families in the summer. The spring high waters make for an exciting run for the more skilled and physically fit. These sections, Hells Canyon Dam to Pittsburg Landing and Heller Bar, pass through Hells Canyon National Recreation Area and Wallowa-Whiteman National Forest, and are located in southeast Washington, on the Oregon Idaho border, in Hells Canyon National Recreation Park.

Practical Info: Rafting season is open approximately from May to October, with whitewater rafting trips ranging in length from 3 days to 6 days. The river is suitable for paddle rafts, oar rafts, inflatable kayaks, and dories. Portage may be required.

Useful Tips: Guides are optional, although permits may be required for private trips, and whitewater experience is recommended.

Expect to See: Black bears and deer in an environment of canyons, and mountains with the occasional historic cabins, homes and ruins.
