Our Sports Superfan Says:
The only football stadium in the country with a blue field, Bronco Stadium is at the same time a novelty and a place to come see some good football. It is the home of Boise State University's Broncos football team, as well as host to the annual Humanitarian Bowl, played on New Year's Eve.
While the stadium opened in 1970, the blue, artificial, turf was not installed until 1986. Now, the "Smurf Turf" is the stadium's trademark, having been replaced twice (most recently in 2002), to get closer to the feel of real grass. The Broncos have excelled on their home field, winning just under 80 percent of their home games since moving to the stadium. In 2006, fans here watched an undefeated Boise State team that eventually went on to pull off a stunning upset of Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl in the school's first BCS bowl appearance.
In addition to the Broncos, the stadium also hosts the Humanitarian Bowl. This has been played since 1997, making it the longest-running cold-weather bowl out there. The hometown Boise State team has played in four of these bowls, as of 2007, going 3-1. Bronco Stadium has also hosted the NCAA Track and Field Championships twice – in 1994 and 1999.
The stadium has been renovated several times, most recently in 1996, bringing its capacity up to 30,000. With the Broncos rising to national prominence recently, capped off by that '06 undefeated run, there are plans in place to increase the stadium's capacity even more, perhaps up to 50,000, while maintaining the atmosphere and views of the surrounding landscape.
Bronco Stadium is located on the campus of Boise State University.
